What to Bring to Your Tax Appointment

Not every item applies to everyone. Bring what fits your situation — and if you are not sure whether something matters, bring it anyway.

If applicable means bring it only if it applies to your situation. Everything else applies to every client.

Bring These Every Time

Photo ID
Social Security cards for everyone on the return
IRS PIN for everyone on the return If applicable
Last year’s tax return

Employment Income

All W-2 forms If applicable

Self-Employment & Gig Work

All 1099-NEC self-employed income, and your detailed expenses If applicable
Self-employed without a 1099? If applicable Bring 12 months of business bank statements, plus a summary of gross income and a summary of detailed business expenses.
All 1099-K forms and/or tax summaries from rideshare and delivery platforms If applicable Uber, Uber Eats, DoorDash, Amazon Flex, Lyft and any other platform — plus any expenses related to the business.
All 1099-K forms from payment and selling platforms If applicable PayPal, Venmo, eBay, Etsy, Shopify, and similar.

Other Income

All 1099-MISC forms — other income If applicable
All 1099-INT forms — interest income, usually from banks and others If applicable
All 1099-B forms — investment income from brokerages If applicable Stocks, dividends and crypto.
All SSA-1099 forms — Social Security income If applicable
All 1099-R forms from retirement accounts and/or pensions If applicable
All W-2G forms from the lottery, casino or bingo If applicable
All 1099-G forms from unemployment If applicable
K-1 from an S Corp or an LLC, and/or 1099-DIV from a C Corp If applicable

Health Insurance

All 1095-A forms from the Health Insurance Marketplace (Obamacare) If applicable

Interest Paid & Education

All 1098-E forms — student loan interest If applicable
All 1098 forms — mortgage interest If applicable
All 1098-T forms — college and university tuition payments If applicable

If You Are Claiming Children

Birth certificate, plus school and/or doctor documents If applicable The documents must show you as the parent or legal guardian, and must show the same address as yours.

Rental Property

Information on all rental properties you have, with their income and expenses If applicable

Anything Else

Any other tax-related documents you received When in doubt, bring everything. It is always better to have a document you did not need than to make a second trip.
